Saturday 10 PM Tropical update: Tracking Invest 94 in the Gulf

A tropical wave near Yucatan will drift north toward the Texas coast early this week and spread rain across much of the western and northern Gulf Coast.

The wave is expected to become a depression or Tropical Storm Nicholas before it moves into southeast Texas on Monday. A ridge of high pressure over the southeast US will keep its direct path west toward Texas, but it will still spread deep tropical moisture and rain over coastal Louisiana.

We'll need to watch for some tropical downpours through the middle of the week. Totals of 2-4+ inches look likely this week for southeast Louisiana, while 5-10 inches of rain could fall along the southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana coasts. At the moment, models are hinting Wednesday could be the rainiest day for our area.

Another wave coming off of Africa has a medium chance of development this week. It's too soon to know what it will do, but it will face strong winds later this week that could hamper development. The next name on the list after Nicholas is Odette.

The National Hurricane Center is also highlighting a couple more spots with a change to develop long-term. One is off the East Coast of the US and would not threaten us. The other is way out near Africa.

Our area looks to remain quiet through next week.
