Former Labor Senator Stephen Conroy says it's just "humiliating" for Prime Minister Scott Morrison to have his own quotes read out to him supporting state government homebuyer schemes similar to federal Labor's housing policy.
It comes as Labor Leader Anthony Albanese unveiled the Opposition’s signature policy on Sunday at the party's national campaign launch in Perth.
The Help to Buy scheme aims to reduce the cost of home ownership for 10,000 Australians a year by allowing the government to purchase up to 40 per cent of the equity in the house.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has argued Labor’s Help to Buy homeowners scheme shows the Opposition does not have the necessary understanding of the economy, the housing market and the banking system.
"All this confected outrage from him ... literally this bloke will say anything on any given day forgetting what he said just a few years ago," Mr Conroy told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.
"He supported an identical Victorian scheme – New South Wales have something similar, the WA, South Australian Liberals have something similar – it's like just stop pretending that this is an issue."
