With the false illusion of deception falling apart in the aftermath of interrogations conducted during Operation Desert Storm, a career intelligence officer began a decades-long search for trust-based strategies. Work with behavioral science researchers from around the world led to a deeper understanding of the vital and irreplaceable role of trust not just in geopolitics, but also in business and our personal lives. Steven Kleinman’s career as an intelligence officer spans five continents, four wars, three decades, two advanced degrees, and one hope for the future. He earned awards from both the Central Intelligence Agency and the Defense Intelligence Agency for his operational achievements while also being named by Human Rights First as one of Nine Heroes Who Stood Up Against Torture. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 2015 in the rank of full colonel. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
