Tesla's 4680 Battery Production Requires New Techniques, Panasonic Says

Panasonic says it has largely achieved the tech goals of producing Tesla's 4680 batteries, "but mass-producing them requires new techniques."

Panasonic's head of battery division told Nikkei Asia that as the company is preparing for Tesla's 4680 battery production, it is facing new manufacturing challenges as part of that process.

Kazuo Tadanobu, CEO of Panasonic's battery division, spoke to Nikkei Asia and explains that the 4680-format cells are substantially larger than the 2170-format cells Panasonic currently supplies to Tesla. They have about five times the capacity of 2170 cells, Tadanobu said. The 4680 size—46 millimeters wide by 80 millimeters long—was considered the optimal size when factoring in cost, the vehicles themselves, and other possibilities posed by cylindrical batteries," he said.

The Japanese company Panasonic has presented its prototype of batteries designed by Tesla engineers. In what can be classified as a coup of authority in this nascent market, the benefits of the new models include greater size and more energy, which would contribute ostensibly to improve the autonomy of the electric cars of the future.

The new battery known as the 4680 is 46mm in diameter and 80mm in height , representing a considerable capacity increase that is guaranteed to provide five times more power than current Tesla models. As a relevant point, it was possible to know that for the 4680 battery the exclusive supplier will be Panasonic, relegating LG and CATL among other brands.

The union of these two giants in the energy section will focus on producing high-capacity batteries, what also appears is that these will not be in the economic range and that they expect their production to increase by 100% by 2022 In other information about the brand new batteries equipped with 4680 cells, it is that they can generate six times more power than the pre-existing ones and provide electric cars with 16% more autonomy .

Tesla plans to start the tests and the production of the batteries in March 2022 , what is not very clear is the arrival date of the first vehicles or their tests due to the crisis of drivers that walks through the markets. Regarding the Tesla Panasonic alliance, it is leveraged by the decision of the Japanese giant to work on US soil, specifically in the state of Nevada.
