As the session began, the president, 78, was caught on camera folding his arms and gradually drifting asleep.
Biden's eyelids remained closed for a few seconds more before he awoke himself, but they did not close again for a second time.
This time, the man Trump called "Sleepy Joe" closed his eyes for 30 seconds before being roused awake by a man in a suit.
After uncrossing his arms and listening to what the staff member was saying, the president applauded the opening speaker.
