Inspiration Daily Oct 30 2021: Rethinking and repurposing objects (notably waste) in creative ways

Today's Inspiration: Radical Matter: Rethinking Materials for a Sustainable Future

WHY It Inspires Me:
Rethinking and repurposing objects (notably waste) in creative ways for purposes that uplift and sustain the planet we currently call home.

WHAT It Inspired Me to Do:
Repurpose into a piece of art EVERY bit of waste that comes out of my household.

Launched publicly in June 2015, and retired in August 2019, the FrankenToyMobile was a pedal-powered maker space that encourages imagination and curiosity by providing free, hands-on workshops where youth and adults reused toys as raw material for original creations. By inviting youth to modify “junk” toys into objects that they felt expressed their identity and personality, we encouraged them to experiment, challenge dominant ideas about gendered toys, and see the world as being full of possibility. During the project’s run, we engaged more than 5500 people through more than 100 workshops in public spaces around Chicago.

"Human hair is a rapidly growing natural resource, with the UK alone amassing approximately 6.5 million kg of human hair waste every year. The current placement of hair in landfills results in the expulsion of toxic gasses into the natural environment. This shocking fact inspired Sanne Visser’s 2016 MA project The New Age of Trichology, which explores how discarded human hair can be repurposed into an abundant new design material."

The London based material researcher and designer started the process by collecting discarded hair from salons across London. Visser collaborated with both a professional spinner and ropemaker/knot specialist, who took the hair through traditional wool making techniques to transform it into a useful and pliable material.
