Around this time every year engineering work takes place between Newcastle and Edinburgh on the East Coast Main Line. Rail replacement buses run up the east coast, but London North Eastern Railway (LNER) also operate a number of diverted services along the Tyne Valley Line and on to Edinburgh via Carstairs Junction.

Today we see some of the LNER diverted services working at Carlisle. Bi-mode class 800 Azuma sets are used, as the Tyne Valley Line is not electrified. These services stop at Carlisle for crew changeovers, but they do not set down or pick up passengers.

I am normally pretty fastidious when it comes to keeping a record of each train, but there were so many interesting people to talk to at Carlisle that I lost track on this occasion!

I hope you enjoy watching the LNER Azumas in action outside their normal habitat.
