The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics will mostly use green electricity at the venues, with Zhangjiakou serving as a main supplier as well as one of the competition zones.
Zhangjiakou has several unique advantages when it comes to climate resources. The city has tapped the growth potential of the new energy sector, highlighting the development and utilization of wind, solar, and biomass energy, while continuously expanding the scale of clean energy development. Zhangjiakou's Zhangbei District has just completed the world’s first demonstration project of a flexible Direct Current power grid with a four-terminal ring structure of plus-or-minus 500 kilovolts. All venues for the Beijing Winter Olympics will have full coverage of urban green power grids during the games. The electricity for the venues’ lighting, operations, and transportation will all be provided by photo-voltaic power generation and wind power generation in Zhangjiakou.
