(13 Aug 2021) Cuba began distributing humanitarian aid donated by foreign countries on Friday as it continued to deal with a shortage in supplies.
In recent weeks, the nation has received donations of food, fuel and medicine from countries including Mexico, Nicaragua, China and Russia, as well as organisations such as UNICEF and the World Food Programme.
As the country received the donations, claims circulated on social media that they were being exchanged for cash.
Before the items are delivered across Cuba, they are packed by volunteers in a warehouse, located on the outskirts of Havana.
The parcels usually contain between eight and nine kilograms of basic food.
Cuba is suffering a severe crisis that began before the new coronavirus pandemic and was linked to sanctions imposed by former US President Donald Trump.
COVID-19 and the paralysis of critical sectors such as tourism provoked an economic downturn which caused dramatic shortages of goods and services across the country.
