In this lesson students meet Old Joe Crow and learn his story, song, sound, and gesture. When Joe was young, he could fly farther and faster than any other crow. As Joe grew older, he slowed down and the younger crows began calling him "slow Joe Crow." Joe had a lot of pride and he was determined to prove that he was still the best at something. When he discovered a row boat in the stream by his nest, Joe taught himself how to row. Now Joe is the only crow who can row a boat and he rows and sings "row, row, row your boat gently down the stream" as the younger crows fly overhead. Students gesture and say Joe's sound by pretending to pull back on the oars of a boat with both hands and making Joe's sound by giving a loud groan as they row their boats home. Topics for discussion and read aloud include crows, growing older, flying, rowing a boat, and working to be the best you can be.
