After 2 days, department stores in KL close again, citing SOPs

PETALING JAYA: After only two days of reopening, several department stores in Kuala Lumpur have decided to shut down temporarily again, citing compliance with SOPs from the authorities.

Sogo Malaysia announced the closure of all its stores from today until further notice, with the exception of its supermarket at its Kuala Lumpur store.

“In compliance with the latest SOPs from the authorities, please note that all our Sogo stores will be closed from July 11 until further notice,” it said in a statement.

Isetan Kuala Lumpur also revised its operation hours at its Lot 10 and KLCC outlets while it shut its store at The Gardens Mall.

Over at 1 Utama, it said only its food section will remain open.

Meanwhile, on social media, netizens agreed with the quick U-turn with Facebook user Aaron Kok writing: “Good.

MKN, please don’t let any malls open.

”Another user, Falynee Faha, said these stores should not be allowed to open in the first place as the number of infections remained high.

On Friday, the announcement to reopen several well-known department stores in Kuala Lumpur had left many puzzled since the federal territory is still under Phase 1 of the National Recovery Plan.

Checks by FMT yesterday at the Isetan outlet at Suria KLCC and Sogo’s department store showed that many shops and certain sections remained shut, despite the reopening.

The number of customers at both stores was also fewer than usual.

At the Isetan outlet, the majority of customers were at its food market, with visitors seen purchasing essential food items.

At Sogo, only the department store was allowed to open, while its other tenants remained shut.

Both Isetan and Sogo carried out body temperature checks on customers, provided hand sanitisers and took down information from the customers before allowing them to enter the premises.
